We’ve all heard about those people who have quit their day jobs and now either work from home, or are living the live traveling the world whilst blogging about it. It all looks so simple, if these other people can do it, why can’t I?
The honest answer is that anyone can do, but it isn’t simple. What you will often find is that those people who are making tens of thousands of dollars a month have been working hard behind the scenes in order to get to that point. Even if you put in a heap of effort, there is no guarantees that you will be able to successfully start making money from your website or blog.
I remember reading somewhere that the 75% of blogs will fail/die within the first year, and within 2 years this number increases to over 95%. I’m not sure if the stats are correct, or even where they came from, but from my own experience I would say that it wouldn’t be too far wrong. The problem is that it all sounds nice an easy until you are doing it for yourself, then you come to realize just how much hard work is involved in not just regularly posting good new content, but also making connections and having people be interested enough in your website to continue returning day after day.
When it comes to making money – most website owners will tell you that you would be better off working at McDonald’s for the first year or so of blogging, as you will put in a lot more time for a lot less pay. The difference is the potential and the enjoyment factor. If you are enjoying what you’re doing, it doesn’t feel like work, and if you get to help others along the way, then it’s even better.
For myself, I’ve personally found that I only started to make money through blogging once I really started to focus on some goals and when I actively sought to make things happen. The build it and they will come mentality might have worked at some point in the past, but with so many new websites being published day after day, you really need to stand out from the crowd to make the most of the opportunities that are available with operating your own blog.
So, in answer to the original question – can you make money? Yes, but it is a lot of work and you won’t make money straight away. If you think you have what it takes then please get started and let us know how you go, if not, don’t worry – you can keep coming back here for all your reading needs 🙂
